Callie awakened suddenly, every nerve on high alert.

Something—a thud. What was it?

She listened, heard the muffle of steps overhead.

Someone was on the boat.

In seconds she had slipped out of bed, tugged on a sweater and was heading upstairs. She could see the stairs, which meant the cabin door hadn’t been securely fastened.

Her racing heart died for a moment at the thought of Max lying facedown on deck. She forced back the fear, crept upward as she scoured the darkness for an intruder.

A hand slid over her mouth. She grabbed it to pull it away, realized it was Max. He moved slightly and she could see his face in the moonlight. He shook his head, beckoned.

Callie followed him on deck, stepping carefully behind him, avoiding the chairs that still sat where they’d left them. He led her to a shadowed spot to one side of the helm.

“Wait.”

They stood together for several moments before she heard the noise again, saw the faint light wavering under the water. Tiny bubbles broke the skin of the ocean.

Someone was under their boat.
